How to Elope in Yosemite: A Complete Guide for Adventurous Couples

If you and your partner are dreaming of an epic elopement in one of the most iconic national parks, Yosemite is your perfect spot!  Just imagine towering granite cliffs, north America’s tallest waterfalls, and an intimate ceremony with the beauty of a golden sunset as your backdrop. We chose Yosemite as our elopement spot and we’re excited to share our favorite tips and the essential steps you’ll need to elope yourself too!

Here’s your step-by-step guide on how to elope in Yosemite, from legal requirements to choosing the best spots and finding the right vendors.

Step 1: Get Your Marriage License

Before you get lost in Yosemite’s natural beauty, you have to take care of the legal details. You’ll need a California marriage license to make things official. You can obtain one from any county in California, but the closest option is the Mariposa County Clerk’s office, located just outside of the park.

Be sure to bring a valid photo ID, and both of you need to be present. There’s no waiting period in California, so you can get your license and get married on the same day if you’d like!

Step 2: Secure a Permit

Yosemite requires a special use permit for any wedding or elopement ceremony that takes place within the park. It’s relatively simple to apply for, and the fee is currently around $150. You’ll need to fill out a form detailing your elopement plans, including the date, location, and the size of your party.

Apply for your permit as early as possible, especially if you’re planning to elope during the busy months of summer or fall. Weekdays or off-season elopements can be a great way to avoid crowds and ensure your dream spot is available!

Step 3: Choose the Perfect Location

Yosemite is packed with jaw-dropping views at every turn, so you’ll have lots of great options for picking a spot for your ceremony . Here are a few iconic locations to consider:

  1. Glacier Point Amphitheater – One of the most popular spots, (and the one that we chose) Glacier Point offers breathtaking panoramic views of Half Dome and Yosemite Valley. It’s ideal for couples who want a dramatic backdrop, especially at sunrise or sunset.
  2. Taft Point – For adventurous couples, Taft Point provides incredible views over Yosemite Valley, with a bit more solitude than Glacier Point. Its a short hike to the point and can be made in a dress and adds a touch of adventure, making it a fantastic spot for an intimate elopement.
  3. Yosemite Falls – If waterfalls are more your style, Yosemite Falls offers a stunning backdrop, especially in spring when the water flow is at its peak. There are lower and upper falls options depending on how much hiking you want to do.
  4. Cathedral Beach – For a more relaxed and accessible location, Cathedral Beach along the Merced River gives you views of El Capitan. It’s perfect if you want a serene riverside setting with a majestic granite backdrop.

Tip: If you want a spot that’s a bit more off-the-beaten-path, consider Sentinel Dome or Merced Grove for a peaceful, secluded ceremony surrounded by giant sequoias.

Step 4: Plan Your Adventure

Yosemite is all about adventure and natural beauty, so why not make your elopement an unforgettable experience? You could hike, have a picnic by the river, or bike through the valley to see the stunning features. Incorporate activities you both love, like stargazing, rock climbing, or a scenic drive to enjoy the day to the fullest.

Tip: An elopement can be an all day experience if you want!  Half the fun is after the sunset.  Its a great place to star gaze near a cozy fire after a full day of exploring and adventure.

Step 5: Book Your Vendors

Yosemite’s remote beauty calls for a  vendors who are familiar with the park and can help make your day stress-free. Here are some key vendors to consider:

  • Photographer/Videographer: You’ll want someone who knows the park well and can capture your epic day. This is a vital piece because not only will the right photographer know the best trails and photo spots, but they will also help you plan a custom timeline for your perfect day.
  • Officiant: Many couples choose to have a friend or family member officiate the ceremony, but if you need an officiant, look for someone who is willing to travel.
  • Hair and Makeup: Opt for a vendor who can provide mobile services and meet you at your accommodation or trailhead. Lots of brides also opt to do their own hair and make up in the morning
  • Florist: Local florists who specialize in elopements will be able to create a bouquet that can survive a hike and still look stunning in photos.

Step 6: Pack Smart

Eloping in Yosemite might mean some hiking or adventuring, so pack accordingly. We recommend bringing comfortable shoes, a light jacket, and water are essential, even if you’re heading to a more accessible location. If you’re hiking to your ceremony spot,  consider bringing a change of clothes for after the ceremony if you’re planning to explore or maybe a dress that you’re comfortable moving in and or okay with getting dirty.

Tip: Don’t forget sunscreen, bug spray, and any permits you need for the day. A small picnic basket with snacks and champagne is a great touch for a post-ceremony celebration in nature!

Step 7: Embrace the Adventure

The beauty of eloping in Yosemite is the freedom it offers. There’s no strict timeline or big production, so allow yourselves to truly enjoy the experience. Take your time soaking in the views, exploring new trails, and savoring the moment together. Whether it’s just the two of you or you’ve invited a few close family members, your Yosemite elopement will be a day you’ll remember for a lifetime.
